WEDDING: CASEY+BRANDON

April 30, 2010

A few weeks ago, I helped my girl Lora shoot a wedding at Primrose Cottage. This place was AWESOME. So awesome, while Lora and I were walking around taking detail shots, I started planning my own wedding there. Not only did I start planning, I actually talked about it OUT LOUD. I love this arrangement, I would put these tables over here, and the ceremony would be this way… No, I’m not engaged. Yes, I am a girl. What can I say, I’m in the wedding business!

Ok, enough about that…

We started the day inside with the bride. Here are a few of my favorites:

uhm…hello gorgeous.Casey has the best laugh EVER. I love this one of Casey’s dad watching from inside as she was taking pictures. Casey and Brandon decided not to see each other before the ceremony so we made sure they had a few minutes of time to themselves immediately after. I snuck this picture of the two of them and there were a couple of anxious little boys that wanted a peek as well. :)   Once they realized they were being watched. My favorite of the day. It was a candy and funfetti themed wedding, so I thought it only appropriate to get the rings in the bubble gum.Casey’s got some moves!Just a fun one blowing bubbles at the end. I love it!

We met at the intersection of Charles Allen and Piedmont.  We walked around Piedmont Park as I got to know them. Her laugh was contagious. You couldn’t help but smile. He was smitten by her. As I watched Ed and Dana interact with each other, you could see comfort, you could see love. Ed was fully aware of my camera and in order to get a little more comfortable taking pictures, he would cheer yayyyy or boooo depending on the moment. It made for a good time and instant laugh.

After a 3 year courtship, Ed and Dana got married at the Capital City Club this past Saturday. Ed came prepared with the yays only this time (as far as I knew) and I’m pretty sure it made for some amazing pictures.

Ed and Dana, thank you so much for trusting me with your wedding day. I had so much fun with you and both you and your family made me feel so welcome and in awe. You are amazing and I wish you a lifetime of happiness.

The day started at Dana’s parent’s house where her and the bridesmaids got ready.

These were the best bridesmaids gifts I have ever seen. Inside each gift was a clutch to match their dresses and jewelry for the big day.

The beautiful bride.

The handsome Ed.

Dana just radiated joy in every picture. It was hard to choose which ones to use!

Ed and Dana wrote letters to each other that were delivered before the ceremony.

The first look.

I love love love the way they look at each other.

A little wind action.

During the Ketubah signing. Do you see the way they look at each other?!?! It makes me melt!

Lots of dancing. This family knows how to have a good time!

Ed and Dana had a trolley take them to the hotel. Notice the “Just Married” sticker in the back window!

It’s not quite summer yet, but if you guessed this blog post title was a Will Smith song…you were right. I know a lot of people are suffering form allergies right now, but I absolutely love this time of year. I get to wear dresses, tank tops and best of all…FLIP FLOPS! It makes me happy every morning when I wake up, walk outside, and it is absolutely beautiful and WARM! Finally!

I’ve been an editing machine the past couple of days, which means I’ve had a lot of music playing. Every conversation I’ve had recently has turned into some sort of  musical, dancing and singing included, neither of which I’m good at.

There will be a couple of weddings posted soon-one will be up on Thursday, but here is a picture of me and Lora from a wedding we shot a couple of weeks ago. We are wearing short sleeves because it was WARM and GORGEOUS and pretty much a perfect day. It just makes me smile. :)

TIED WITH A BOW

April 14, 2010

Without fail, every year on Christmas Eve, I’m up in my old bedroom wrapping presents like a mad man. My family patiently waits as I frantically wrap each person’s Christmas Eve gift, only to carry downstairs and watch them be torn open moments later. Because of this, its hard for me to justify really spending time on wrapping them neatly or making fancy bows and ribbons to go with each present.

Along the same lines, my idea of a birthday gift is to throw it in a bag with tissue paper, because as adults, the excitement of unwrapping a present isn’t the same as a child and we really shouldnt care if our presents come in a bag or not. Its the present inside that matters anyway! In all reality, I’m just really bad at wrapping and always have been. I think its a patience thing.

That is until my dear friend Chelsea gave me a present. Her presents are always meticulously wrapped in the cutest packaging with boxes, bows, and ribbons and are just AMAZING.  The packaging of the present is always as exciting as the present its self. Completely jealous and well aware of my lack of attention to detail, I decided I to would wrap like Chelsea.  Only each year on Christmas Eve, the same ol logic and franticness over shadowed the dreams of becoming an amazing wrapper. Hey dreams can come in the smallest form!

When I started photography, I decided that all of my wedding packaging would recieve the same care and detail as a wedding present. I want my clients to get their disc, albums, press printed books, etc. in the mail and feel as though it is something special for them. I am excited to give clients their photos and I want them to know that thought and care was put into it. Plus I get to make up for years of bad wrapping- bow and all!

Here is the packaging for Drew and Kysha’s wedding last month. I am still looking for a DVD case that I love and the wrapping is pretty basic. But hey, its a start!

Here are a few pages from a press printed book I had made. I love the way it turned out!

This is the front cover.

ABOUT ME

April 8, 2010

I’ve always believed that if its your birthday, its your day. In light of this, I always take off work and treat myself. If there is ever a day to do that..what day but your birthday right?

After graduating college in 2005 with a Bachelor’s in Business, I dabbled in marketing and real estate. Sure enough, every year on January 31st, it was my day and I took off work.

In 2009, it was as if the light switch was turned on when I helped a friend shoot a wedding. On the car ride home, I was mentally exhausted, physically drained, and overwhelmed with complete and total peace. It was the first time in my life I knew this was what I wanted. This was what I had been searching for. Nothing else would ever compare. There is nothing like capturing an image that tells a story. Capturing that special moment between two people and the emotion that compasses it. This is my passion.

I quit my full time job, turned down other offers, and decided to pursue this passion, to fill the longing inside for something more. And my birthday? Well this past year I worked on my birthday. Except it didn’t feel like work. It felt like love..and I LOVE love.

If you would like me to capture your love with my camera, contact me at kelly@kellylanephotography.com

There was a photographer shoot at the Atlanta Prison Farm. I couldn’t go and neither could my good friend and old roommate Evelyn. When photographers started posting their pictures from the shoot online..we were jealous. They had gorgeous models and the location looked fantastic. Whatever, we don’t need a shoot out to go…we decided to go ourselves and shoot each other. Only problem was, we had never heard of the Atlanta Prison Farm and didn’t know where it was, and google was no help.

After talking with people we eventually found out where to go and drove down one afternoon, only to get there and find out it was smack dab in the middle of the ghetto…for real. I don’t have a problem with most areas of Atlanta-but this was completely unfamiliar to us. I mean it was a PRISON that was BURNED DOWN with GRAFFITI all over and we were 2 unsuspecting girls on our own…why would I expect it to feel safe? The farm was off a small and quiet back road and there was no place to park except off the street. Perfect for a crime scene. It was as if we were asking to be attacked- Like how girls in scary movies are out at a place by themselves and you want to scream at them, “What are you doing! Get out of there!” and then they trip and fall. But we really wanted to shoot there! So we pulled off the road and eventually got brave enough to get out of the car. Oh and I forgot to mention there are no trespassing signs EVERYWHERE. We look around, staying as close to our car as possible. A few cars drove by, slowed as they passed and watched us. I saw it in their eyes, we were those girls from the movies- We had to get out of there! We ran back to our car and as we got in a police car came flying by with its lights on- that was our last sign. We got the heck out of there!

Embarrassed by ourselves, we decided to go to a familiar area, Castle Berry Hill and shoot. She posted hers almost immediately. Me…a little longer, but here they are!

This was the first shot I took of Evelyn and she was playing around, but I love it!

Some more playing around (the second shot anyway).

CALLING IN SICK

April 1, 2010

I was 16 years old working at my first job ,Chick-fil-a. I was sick and scheduled work, so I called my manager and he thought I was lying! I really was sick and thought I sounded sick thank you very much and he didn’t BELIEVE me! This has single handily defined how I did and still handle those phone calls.

From last minute white water rafting trips to just having a I don’t want to work today day, my friends would plead, “Come on Kelly, just call in sick!” If I don’t sell being sick, when really sick, how would I ever get out of work just because?! Now that I’m a grown up… when I’m sick, rather than call out, I convince myself I’m fine and go to work. Only to get there, let them see that I really am sick, and leave. How grown up of me.

Tuesday night I was at a PUG meeting to hear Dane Sanders speak. We walked into The Atlanta Wedding Loft and the great thing was, I recognized other photographer faces. The really great thing was, they knew me too! As we mingled with each other at the end of the night, I talked with Dane briefly about his book, The Fast Track Photographer. Some one mentioned Dane’s workshop that was beginning the next day and how awesome it was going to be…and before I knew it both Dane and one of my new and amazingly talented friends Katrina sent me back to those Chick-fil-a days…”Just call in sick and come to the workshop! Whens the last time you called out?” “Um, never I replied.” “Good then you can call out tomorrow and come!” ” I dunno, ” I said, concealing my phobic history of making that phone call. I told them I would make my decision that night and headed home.

I decided not to go to the workshop. For many reasons, one being that I didn’t want to call out sick. As fate would have it, I woke up Wednesday morning SICK. I was so nauseous I could hardly move. After reasoning with myself that it was not that bad and there was no way I was CALLING IN SICK, I made myself get dressed and headed to work. Only to feel WORSE. I walked into the doors, set my stuff on the desk, went straight to the manager’s office, told her I was sick, and left. Oh the irony.

So Dane and Katrina, I did call in sick. I wish it was to come to the workshop, but at least I have a good book to read!
