It is safe to say that color is definitely the trend this spring. And since skinny jeans don’t seem to be going away anytime soon, I have decided to embrace the new trend of…oh dear Lord…making them…colored.

I am not a big wearer of bright colors, but I figured I would start off with this tamed yellow…you know…to blend in with all the pollen. I actually was really hesitant wearing these. I felt like I stood out like a brightly lit neon sign in a room. Electrical buzzing and all. But after some reassurance that I was not in fact a neon sign, I began to feel more comfortable.

If you are going to try this look, my advice would be to make sure you pair them with muted colors and keep it simple. This way it doesn’t become too busy. Also, buy them cheap so you don’t feel bad if you decide you don’t like them! :)

FASHION FIX: POP OF COLOR

March 16, 2012

Last week I discussed wearing white for photo shoots. This week is all about pattern and color. It is normal to gravitate to simple textures, patterns, and colors when planning for a shoot, but in the images below you will see an example of mixing done right. You can see that as long as the colors are complimentary, mixing patterns actually adds interest to the image:

 Now…onto the outfit.

Shirt Dress: $20 TjMaxx Spring ’12>>>> Jacket: Express, old >>>>>Boots: Bakers, old

Ring: free H&M, Spring ’12>>>>>Watch: America’s Mart, old

Notice there are 2 different backgrounds here and how color pops with each one of them.

I am often asked advice on what to wear on photo shoots and without hesitation I blurt out, “Don’t wear white.”

White can be difficult to photograph because it ends up brighter than the rest of the image(notice below) or can make an image look very bland. When shooting for this Fashion Fix, I realized…uh…. I am wearing WHITE (actually cream thank.you.very.much.) AND featuring it on my blog?! What the what?!

So here is why white can work: First, white is only a small part of the outfit (not a big baggy shirt) and secondly, it is textured, so this helps with the visual interest. Another note- usually a background full of color will help offset any blandness.

And for the Will Godfrey’s of the world that want to know who is taking these pics…that would be my beau Michael. He is learning how to shoot. :)

FASHION FIX

March 1, 2012

Today is the first day of March (in case you weren’t aware) and it is 70 degrees outside. The perfect time for a post about coats. I kid. But nonetheless, here one is.  Hey, winter isn’t officially done yet, so you still may need to break one out.

This look is by far the most frequent type of outfit I have worn this winter. Riding boots because of style and comfort. Leggings are way more comfortable than jeans. Am I right ladies or AM I RIGHT?! :) And a scarf and sweater make it extra cozy.

People shy away from photo shoots in the winter and I say don’t! I love the way a good coat photographs and all the layers that make getting different looks easy! Coats help make your outfit look more structured, stylish, and usually can hide things we don’t want shown anyway. ;)

Coat: Express Fall 2010:>>>>I think I paid around $80. On sale of course.

I added this picture from 2010 to show another idea for wearing coats. I usually tell clients to stay away from white, but as a layer, especially with a colorful background, I think it works. The coat is from Express. Look at that hair!

FRIDAY FASHION FIX

January 13, 2012

I know we are only in January, but it’s no secret I am not a fan of winter. So when my favorite store Express launched it’s new Spring line, I thought it only fitting to share my favorite items.

1. Lace top and colored skinny Jeans: need I say more?

2. Floppy hat: I have ALWAYS wanted one of these as I have seen women ROCK them, but I have been shy to try it. Perhaps this will be the season!

3. Striped Blazer: I almost bought one of these at Nordstrom Rack last week. Now I see them EVERYWHERE!

4. Pink..uh hum Salmon (if you watched Friends you know what I mean) colored dress- just needs a belt!

5. Scarf: They have a ton of different colors, including a bright yellow one I am eyeing.

6. The Boho Chic look with head wrap: Another one of those looks I love, but have been too afraid to try.

7. Color Blocking: Skirt, belt and Top: LOVE

8. Pink Blazer: I love this trend in blazers stepping away from black and grays. They have this in different colors, but I want the bright pink one!

FASHION FIX

January 5, 2012

Today’s post is comprised of a predominately Express outfit. I wasn’t kidding when I talked about the majority of my wardrobe coming from Express in this post.

The boots, however, are not Express. I bought these boots from Bakers in the Fall of 2009. When I first purchased them I was super nervous about them. Over the knee boots were just starting to become a thing and I knew I really wanted them, but was afraid of the new trend. I bought them and timidly started to wear them. And then I LOVED them. Last year while shopping, Jessica bought a pair and admitted to me when she first saw them on me she thought they looked like hooker boots. I busted out laughing because this confirmed my fears from the previous year. It’s funny how something that makes you feel so exposed gradually feels normal and then even catches on.

FASHION FIX

December 22, 2011

Today’s post features one of my favorite items this winter: Riding Boots. I wear them pretty much every day. This was a great find because I had been looking for a while and while shopping with my bestie, Jessica, I stumbled upon them. Real leather boots for $75…Score! I didn’t recognize the brand, but they seemed like great quality, so I took them home and google searched it. They popped up on Nordstrom.com for $200! ohhhh yesssss.

The good news is, if you would like a pair, Jessica found similar boots at Nordstrom, and they recently went on sale for $90. You can get them here.

A little trick: I have super skinny calfs and usually boots are way to big- I bought a pair of leg warmers that I will use to fill the boot and when it is really cold, help keep me warm. Only thing is…I didn’t do it in the below pictures. So you will notice the boots bunch up a little bit. I’m okay with this…really….I have embraced my chicken legs. ;)

And just in case you are wondering, I have a long black tank under the shirt that extends to cover all necessary areas.

Necklace: Nordstrom Rack (old). I think it was like $3 on clearance.

FASHION FIX

December 16, 2011

Recently, via Pinterest (which is super addicting by the way), I have discovered a myriad of fashion bloggers. Most of them living in Spain and requiring Google to translate the blog into broken English. I have become semi-obsessed with the trends I see and they have inspired me to think outside of the box a little bit. Bootie shoes anyone???

I learned early on in my teenage days that money doesn’t get you very far when you pay full price for clothes. Especially when you make minimum wage. I have a whole theory of how to shop and buy items on sale. You can read more about that here. So Fashion Fix is a new blog series. A series about deals I find, outfits put together, trends I love, etc. I will try to list where, when and how much I paid for each item when I know them at the bottom of each post.

This first outfit is a dress I found at Express. 80% of my wardrobe comes from Express or Nordstrom Rack. The trick with shopping at Express is to wait until they put the item on sale (not clearance because you can’t use store coupons) and then combine it with a store coupon. For example, this dress was $70. About 2 weeks after I saw it in the store, Express marked all dresses 30% off and then had a coupon for $15 off $30, making the grand total $34! Take that Forever 21 and H&M! You can get store coupons by checking their website, emails and text messages.
