In 2 weeks I turn 30. Oh wait maybe you missed it…that’s THIRTY. As in 3-0!  With the new year rolling around and a significant increase in age, I may or may not have had some emotional meltdowns. If I hunker down and try to set goals for the year, my mind starts running before I can even catch up. OMG I am about to be 30. What did I want to do with my life before I turned 30? Am I where I want to be? I was supposed to be a millionaire by now. Oh wow, now my body is going to fall apart. I should probably go to the doctor more to make sure. And then before I know what hit me, the tears start falling.

Okay this has only happened once. And I feel a lot better now. Especially because in order to defeat 30, I planned a trip to the Caribbean so I can at least turn 30 somewhere new and amazing. This is when I plan to compose my thoughts, goals and dreams for the year. As they stand now, I imagine them to be grand, a little out there, and bigger than anything I could ever accomplish myself. This year will be a year of taking risks. After all, I will be 30…why not?!

Some of my goals have begun to take shape already. The first being a bright yellow email I received Monday morning. Kelly Lane Photography is a Bride’s choice award winner for 2012! I initially thought this must have been sent to the wrong person, but once my name appeared in the image, I conceded…and graciouslly prepared a thank you speech. Kidding.

The next exciting announcement is that I now have a promo video! This has been over a year in the making…and I have held onto it a little bit, just because I am shy about it. It took several years for me to allow a picture of myself to be taken. This takes it to a whole new level.

I am indebted to Craig Obrist  for creating this for me and dedicating hours of time to it in an already super tight schedule. Also thank you Jennifer and Ryan Robinson, Jennifer, and Aaron for modeling. Ya’ll make me look good!

THE SHOOT

July 8, 2011

All I have to say is I have the BEST clients.

You can find out more about The Shoot here and here.

Here are some of my favorites from each session I shot:

Wright family:

Danielle and Patrick:

The Davis family:

Flanagan Family:

The Cain girls:

Like most things, it started with an idea. I knew of someone I wanted to help. Someone that had impacted my life and many others. As I brainstormed ways to help out, I realized there was a tool at my disposal that involved simply donating my time. Photography. As I shared the idea with my close friend Jessica, she had similar sentiments. We wanted to help and we felt others would too.

So began the planning of The Shoot. Seven Atlanta area photographers offering their time and talent, a close group of friends rallying together, and several other volunteers to help make it happen.

Thank you to the photographers, friends, volunteers, and families who were a part of  The Shoot and helped make it a success!

Here are a few images from behind the scenes of the day:

The glamourous photoshoots…complete with trash can.

Jazz hands!

I tried to be like Will and have a cool hat.

Getting ready for pictures. The photographers (that were still there).

The team that put The Shoot together, volunteered their time and helped make it happen.

The following sequence of images had me laughing for about a minute straight…

It’s official, I live inside the Perimeter or ITP as the cool Atlantans like to call it. Technically I am just on the right side of being ITP, but really I just tell people I’m ITP. It makes me seem way cooler. My life has been consumed with several things recently, the 2 primary being moving and organizing The Shoot.

I have partnered with the non-profit organization Project Go and local Atlanta photographers to offer discounted photo sessions for $50! All proceeds from The Shoot will benefit a family in need. This is such a great cause and I am so happy to see it all come together.

If you would like more information or to book a session check out theshootevent.com.

See you May 22nd!

WEDDING: VIDEO SHOOT

April 13, 2011

Every morning the alarm blares at 7:30 am . I roll over, blindly hit snooze and fall back asleep. 3 minutes later, the alarm again. I try to trick myself by setting multiple alarms. What once started off as 1 has now become 3. All at different intervals with unique sound and pitch. The snooze button is pushed 5 times and  about 45 MINUTES LATER I finally throw my feet off the side of the bed and force myself to sit up. I tell myself if I get up I will reward myself with coffee and  a nap in the afternoon. Yep, I actually bribe MYSELF. Of course by the time I get home in the afternoon I have so much to do that I tell myself instead of taking a nap I will just go to bed early. Rigghhhtttt just like every.other.night.

Today, I woke up and convinced myself it was Saturday and that I could go back to sleep. Like a little devil on my shoulder, every part of my body told me it was ok and that I deserved to rest. Everything else in life could wait. It was about here and now and I was TIRED. Eventually, I listened to the voice of logic, the angel on my shoulder if you will, and rolled out of bed. LATE .I rushed to get ready and out the door. I told myself that when I got home I wasn’t going to work, but instead hit the gym. A reward for myself. I was all for this plan until I got home and actually had to go to the gym. So here I sit, pictures in hand, and blog instead. It’s my reward to myself.

Last week I wrapped the final shoot for the Kelly Lane promo video. Aaron and Jennifer were great models. They even made it look like they were a real married couple. Here are some images from the shoot. Next up…outtakes :)

We first met at Christopher+Sarai’s Wedding in November.  I walked into the venue and  followed my normal routine of scoping out the grounds to get a feel for everything and I spotted them. My eyes narrowed in on the floral arrangements and I squealed in excitement. Several thoughts:
- They were beautiful. Obviously. Oh and modern. And completely CREATIVE.
- It was completely, 150% my style of floral designer.
- This was going to be an amazing wedding. That was never in question, but this sealed the deal. Took the cake. Finished the juice box and squished it.
- I needed to find the florist and meet her. ASAP.

I’m so excited to feature Jaemi, owner, lead designer and amazing wedding planner of Exhale! Events & Design.  We met last month and she has a lot of insight into the business and common questions brides often ask. I was totally excited to sit down with her and pick her brain.

Meet Jaemi.

1. How did you get into this business?

My mother is a seamstress. She creates wedding gowns. My aunt is a florist and cake designer.  I grew up around it. Although I tried different jobs, nothing compares to the wedding industry. I love weddings. I ventured in cake design, but I feel most creative and passionate about planning and design.

2. What is the ideal bridal relationship?

I love when a bride comes in with an idea. Pictures, colors, all of it. a good designer will take the brides vision and run with it. Tell a story. Make it something the bride could have never imagined.

3. How can a bride find a designer/planner that they can trust their vision with?

Put the designer to the test. Tell them what you want and what type of ideas you have. Ask the designer to give you a vision or idea based on what you told them. The designers job is to create your vision. Do you feel comfortable with what they are telling you? If not, find someone you do feel like gets your idea.

4. What should a bride bring to help you understand her vision?

Pictures, color palettes, any inspiration that you find. This is key! Also, determine whether or not you want a designer or a planner?

5. Designer or a planner? What is the difference?

A planner is going to be less expensive. Essentially planners are connecting the vendors and wedding day time line. If you have all the details and just need someone to help you carry it out on the wedding day, then a planner may be right for you.

A designer takes your ideas and makes the vision come to life.

6. What is the number 1 misconception brides have about their wedding?

The expense of the flowers. They are expensive! Get an idea of how much different flowers cost. Have the florist give you alternative examples that fit in your budget.

7. How do you prevent a bride from becoming overwhelmed by all the choices/decisions?

Take it one step at a time. Make decisions based on what moves you, what you have an emotional response to. When the bride makes a decision I listen and repeat it to them.

8. What are the 3 main things to look for when choosing a wedding vendor?

- You have to be comfortable with the person.

- Make sure they understand your vision.

- Make sure you like their style. Look at their past work. Does it fit with you?

Thank you so much Jaime for your help and advice! This helped me so much! For more information on Exhale! Events & Design click here.

I am sooooooooo excited to announce that my webpage is officially live!

I have been holding out for a website design that fits my style and matches my current brand. When Promise Tangeman released style groups and I saw her designs. I DIED. It was perfect. I immediately purchased the design and have been working diligently in Showit, to make the site my own. There are some cool changes that will be made soon, but for now check it out!

The webpage is at www.kellylanephotography.com. While there is a link to the blog on the site, the address to access the blog directly is www.kellylaneblog.com.

Here is a little preview. Let me know what you think!

L-L-LAS VEGAS

March 16, 2010

As I boarded my flight to Las Vegas, I couldn’t help but shriek with excitement. I COULD.NOT.CONTAIN. MYSELF. I had no idea what to expect, but my expectations were set high. REALLY High. I calmed myself, reasoning that I would only be let down with such thoughts. So I relaxed, pushed my back against my seat, fastened my seat belt securely as instructed, and thought about other things. AND… moments later I was back to shrieking with excitement. It was FINALLY happening. I was going to VEGAS baby! I couldn’t be contained.

We walked through the halls of MGM grand and I was a little taken back. It was huge! There were over 14,000 photographers there for the same reason I was.  I felt so small and a little overwhelmed. As my dreams were slowly fading into reality, we walked passed a guy with a rather odd shirt on. As he passed, I looked up at his face and realized it was [b]ecker, a well known photographer I have been following for a while. Lora, being as bold as she is, calls out his name and we stop to chat. He was kind, welcoming, and most of all completely normal. From that moment on, our trip changed. I determined to meet as many people as I could and soak up every opportunity available. Every single moment from that point on was better than the next. As we went to various parties, classes, meetings, etc. Lora, Evelyn, and I looked at each other completely stunned: “Did that really just happen? ” “OH MY GOSH how cool was that?! ” “What else could possibly be better than what we just did?”  These became our catch phrases of the trip. Every moment surpassing the next.

There are two types of icing on this rather delicous, decadent, and extremely large cake(mmmm…):

1. The friends I made. I met so many amazing and talented people from all over the country. I was amazed at the sincerity and openness of each person I came to know.

2. Photographer’s unite: An early morning gathering of Christain photographers on Wednesday morning to worship Jesus Christ and encourage each other in our businesses.

I am so grateful to have been able to go on this trip and the opportunities that came because of it. Once again, I have never been so sure of something I wanted to do and the certainty of God’s hand in my life. I am in awh.

Here are some pictures taken with my iphone:

The image on the left is [B]ecker photographing me. He held a shoot and did 100 head shots in an hour.

So we were playing the slot machines and had NO IDEA what we were doing.  Angela works at MGM and hung out with us for a little bit showing us the ropes. She was a blast!

This last image was taken by Liana. These are the photographers who gathered together for Photographer’s Unite!

As I sit here at the Las Vegas airport, I feel peace. Peace of knowing I am in God’s hands. Peace to know where I want my business to go. Peace and awh of how wonderful these past 4 days have been.

I came to Vegas for a workshop, and left with new friends and new perspective for photography beyond anything I could have ever imagined. There will most definitely be more posts to come about this trip, but for now, here’s a sneak peek of a wedding I shot last Saturday. Drew and Kysha you are amazing.
